Defrocked Chicago priest facing new child sexual abuse charges

A defrocked Chicago Roman Catholic priest who is also a convicted child sex offender is once more facing charges of sexual abuse. According to news reports, the ex-priest is accused of two sexual assault/abuse incidents occurring in 2005 between September and December. The victim, now 19 years old, waited until now to report the abuse. The ex-priest appeared in a Chicago courtroom this week to face these latest charges.

During the courtroom appearance, an attorney representing the ex-priest claimed the man suffers from a mental condition making him a “sexually violent person.” The victim, who attended an after-school program at the ex-priest’s church, says the priest twice assaulted him, once after a White Sox game and another time in the priest’s rectory bedroom. According to a Cook County state attorney, the priest instructed the boy not to tell anyone what had occurred. The defendant was paroled in 2009 after serving time for sexually abusing five boys.

When the 45-year-old left prison in 2009, prosecutors took steps to have him detained in a mental health facility as they sought legal action to have the ex-priest officially declared a sexually violent person. If this petition receives approval, the defendant will remain in the state’s custody indefinitely. Abuse support groups reportedly believe this is where the ex-priest belongs.

It doesn’t matter why people engage in criminal sexual conduct, even if it’s due to a medical or mental condition. What matters is seeking justice for sexual abuse victims and protecting people from this and other kinds of abuse. That is why it’s important to report sex crimes and child sexual abuse. When victims are threatened into silence by the abuser, law enforcement agencies and a good personal injury attorney can take steps to provide protection – but only if victims or their family members speak out.
