Highland Park martial arts teacher charged with sex crimes

The owner of a martial arts studio in downtown Highland Park has been charged with two counts of promoting prostitution and one count of solicitation of a sexual act. According to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office, the man is accused of soliciting a sex act from a woman for money and attempting to arrange sex for other people for money.

The 33-year-old owner of the north suburban martial arts studio was arrested on Aug. 6 after an investigation into an allegation by a complainant. The Highland Park Police Department, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s office were all involved in the investigation that led to warrants for the man’s arrest.

The martial arts studio offers individual and group classes for youth and adults in martial arts, Tai Chi, and Qigong. According to the business’s website, it also offers teen mentoring. The business had only been open in Highland Park since this May. The business had previously been located in the Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills. The owner has reportedly been in business for 17 years.

The defendant’s bond was set at $25,000. Highland Park Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact them or their own local law enforcement agency, which means that more alleged victims could come forward, and additional charges brought.

Law enforcement takes accusations of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation very seriously. Anyone who has been the victim of a sexually-based offense should notify authorities immediately. Attorneys trained in assisting victims of these crimes can help them through the difficult process of coming forward with their story and providing testimony against the perpetrator. They can also help ensure that in addition to facing criminal charges, the perpetrator compensates the victim for any medical expenses, other damages, and pain and suffering.
