Justice Ginsburg speaks about same-sex marriage

Illinois residents may be interested in recent comments made by Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg regarding same-sex marriage and the Constitution of the United States. After officiating a same-sex wedding, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg spoke to an audience about how the genius of the U.S. Constitution is reflected by the growing equality and acceptance of same-sex marriage in the country.

Justice Ginsburg told her Philadelphia audience that, although the idea of equality has only been applied to women, blacks and gays by society over time, the Constitution is largely driven by equality for all citizens. Justice Ginsburg spoke on how our society has become more “embracive” than it was in the beginning.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has served on the U.S. Supreme Court for 20 years and is known for her candid writing, which is often as the dissenting vote. She said that since Sandra Day O’Connor retired, she is on the losing side of many cases that would have went in the other direction if O’Connor had stayed on the Supreme Court. While decisions are often split 5-4, Justice Ginsburg says that all of the Justices have a cordial working relationship.

Many of the cases that have been brought before the Supreme Court are related to same-sex partners. Though laws are changing at the federal level, many cases are still unresolved. A lawyer with experience in family law may be able to help a same-sex couple with adopting a child or forming or dissolving a civil union. A lawyer who has worked with LGBT couples may be able to communicate the changes in the law as they apply to their current situation and work to preserve their rights as a couple.
