Several injured in SW Chicago pile-up

Seven people were injured in early September when a three-vehicle pile-up occurred on Chicago’s southwest side. The car accident occurred in the Brighton Park neighborhood on Sept. 1 shortly before noon. One of the victims, a young boy, suffered serious injury in the crash. That child’s mother and the driver who reportedly caused the crash are expected to receive citations in connection with the incident. A total of seven people were transported to local medical facilities after the serious collision.

Authorities report the crash was caused by a woman in her 20s who made an improper left turn, crossing in front of dense traffic on Western Avenue. That woman, who was driving a minivan, collided with a sedan that was traveling north through the intersection as she attempted to turn east. A total of six people were injured in the sedan during the collision, as was the driver of the van, believed to have caused the accident. After that initial collision, the Chrysler sedan struck a westbound Ford Windstar. The occupants of that vehicle, a couple in their 60s, declined medical attention.

The 11-year-old boy who suffered the worst injuries was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. An 8-year-old child was also taken to local medical facilities after suffering moderate injuries. All other victims in the crash appear to have suffered non-life threatening wounds.

The at-fault driver was cited for making an improper left turn into traffic. In addition, the mother of the injured boy was cited for driving without insurance and operating a vehicle with a suspended license. She was behind the wheel of the sedan at the time of the crash. Even though the at-fault driver is not facing serious criminal charges in connection with the case, she could still be required to pay for the boy’s medical costs through a civil suit. Injured parties in this case could recover damages from the person who caused the wreck, allowing them to avoid financial ruin because of exorbitant medical bills.
